Imagine that a powerful storm devastated YOUR community killing neighbors, leveling your development and leaving hundreds homeless. Imagine the challenges facing workers as they attempt to help the community recover. This was the situation facing public health nurse Irish Grace Ramirez on November 8, 2013 after Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines killing 7,000 and displacing over 6 million people.
The UUSC partnered with the nonprofit Trauma Resource Institute (TRI) to train first responders and caregivers, giving them the tools to help survivors recover from the profound emotional trauma of the disaster. Irish Grace credits the training offered by TRI with giving her the strength to maintain her own resiliency in the face of such suffering. In turn she has trained more than 100 others in the TRI's Community Resiliency Model (CRM) and together they are bringing new hope and healing to their communities.
If you feel helpless when you watch the news and see the devastation following a natural disaster, know that you CAN make a difference. Your contribution will enable the UUSC to bring hope and support to those who are on the front lines of disaster relief.
