We are a Faith in Action

Suzanne Perry, Co-Chair, Member Engagement & Development

One of the hallmarks of the Unitarian Universalist faith is how we practice. Unitarians get involved in our congregations and in our communities; to strengthen and sustain our liberal religious movement and to bring our values to life in the world. We are, first and foremost, a faith in action.

The opportunity for lay persons to share in the ministry of this congregation has never been greater. And we offer many opportunities to become involved outside these walls as well, in important social justice work. If you are a regular reader of this publication, you see a sampling of our many volunteer projects and programs every month. Perhaps you are active in some of them. If you are new to First U or a long-time member wondering how you can be of service, please reach out to any of the volunteers you see actively engaged – or, if you’re not sure how you want to engage, perhaps I can help.

I have recently assumed a new volunteer role — co-chairing (alongside Nancy Pinson) an exciting new team we are calling Member Engagement and Development. We have many volunteer opportunities available on this team. One of our jobs is matching your talents and interests with our many volunteer opportunities.

For example, if you’re a writer or a graphics artist, or know how to use social media, or how to operate a video camera, the Communications Team has many volunteer opportunities available. Our music, religious exploration (religious education for children, youth and adults), building and grounds team, pastoral care team, Emmanuel Dining Room and other social justice teams are all looking for volunteers.

I am reminded of this quote: ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ – Winston Churchill

And this one, from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King: “Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

If you’re looking for ways to be more fully engaged in practicing your faith, it would be my pleasure to talk with you about our many volunteer opportunities.  I’m in the member directory or email suzannefirstchurch@gmail.com.
