Early in the Spring, ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) a social justice program at First U asked for help to put together New Apartment Kits (NAK) for young people aging out of foster care and moving into their own apartments at age 18. Many people stepped forward and donated items that were requested or cash that allowed Marge Stitz and Susan Hodges to shop for items that remained. This allowed them to put together 9 wash baskets to go to the young people when they take possession of their first apartment.
The practical support this provides makes such a difference for these young people who often don't realize they need some of the most basic items. But the emotional support this provides makes an even greater difference in the way they view the world by knowing people care about them.
The whole ILYA team thanks all the donors for making the NAK kick-off such a success. First U has been recognized by Governor Markell as a leader supporting young people aging out of foster care in Delaware. You all make that happen. BRAVO!!!
