The First “New Apartment Kit” is Being Delivered

This coming week ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults… aging out of foster care) will deliver the first “New Apartment Kit” to a young woman who just got the keys to her first apartment. The “kit”  is a  wash basket full of basic household needs to get her started off… things like paper towels, cleaning products, toilet tissue, kitchen towels & hot pads, laundry soap, clothes hangers and a trash can.
Being in foster care doesn't prepare a young person to know what it takes to start up housekeeping on your own. Two years ago one young woman explained to us what it was like to realize there were so many items that always were needed. To have to spend what little money she had on things other than food and transportation just to have a functional living space was a terrible surprise.
That's what got the NAK (New Apartment Kits) project started and First U members and friends gave it life! The caring that this demonstrates to young people just getting started out on their own makes such an impact. Thanks, First U for making this happen and thanks to Sue Hodges and Marge Stitz for leading the project. Great job!!!
