Many of you probably remember Dane Cox, a young man that ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) supported when he aged out of foster care. He sang at church a number of years ago – such a beautiful tenor voice! He put his own future on hold to become the guardian (along with his wife Maggie) of his younger brother, Gabe. Gabe was tragically killed in a car accident last week.
Gabe stood out as he “lit up the world” everywhere he went. At his funeral service, we heard how he offered support, caring and joy to everyone he met. Despite losing his parents at a very young age, he always had a smile and never met a challenge he couldn't meet. He won awards left and right and was headed towards a fantastic future as a gifted architect.
We all are saddened by this loss and offer our deepest sympathy to Dane and Maggie and all of his family and friends. ILYA has asked Judge Barbara Crowell (who was closely involved with Dane and Gabe) to advise us on a fitting way to honor Gabe. An update will be published when it's decided what that will be and anyone who would like to join in will be most welcome.
