On Wednesday, August 10th our church hosted a vigil on Concord Pike, where our Black Lives Matter banner had been. Over 80 people attended, many from different community organizations such as Black Lives Matter, Repeal Delaware, Wilmington Peacekeepers, Movement for a Culture of Peace, and others. Members from the Mill Creek and West Chester UU churches were also there to support us. Ashley Biden, Joe Biden's daughter, lent some celebrity to the vigil, and there was a strong media presence, which resulted in stories in the News Journal (front page!), WHYY radio, and NBC 10 Philadelphia. Our very own Cindy Cohen and Judy Govatos can be seen in videos giving eloquent interviews about why our church supports the Black Lives Matter movement. We made posters, wore our “Standing on the Side of Love” t-shirts, sang and chanted, and received supportive honks from passing cars. Other vigils are in the works, so please keep your eyes out for your next opportunity to participate!
