Did you know that receiving homemade cookies and /or tasty snacks sends a strong message to a student facing college for the first time? Young people aging out of foster care don’t get the same “love packages” many of our children do when they head off to school.
ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) has been facilitating “Student Care Packages” for 12 years to help fill that gap. We know that the feeling of isolation and disconnectedness can undermine the successful transition into college life. It’s getting something as simple as homemade cookies or some other snacks that let these young people know someone cares about them. That makes a big difference in easing those freshmen jitters and giving encouragement at exam time.
We still have students for whom we’re seeking volunteer package senders. It’s only 5 times during the school year and doesn’t have to be expensive. You can easily sign up with Sue Wilson at coffee hour on Sunday or by contacting her at wilsonsue8@yahoo.com.
As always, thanks so much for the support that can make a huge impact in a young person’s life.
