ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) got a last minute notification that 2 additional students are requesting Student Care Packages. So we’re looking for 2 more volunteers willing to send small packages to a student 5 times during the school year. These students are seeking the emotional support of someone reaching out more than the items being sent. The packages tell them someone cares about them and their success in school.
It’s overwhelming to these young people to be suddenly out on their own, in the new environment of campus life with no one to help calm the nerves, offer encouragement and celebrate successes. A friendly note and some snacks tell a teen that someone is thinking of them.
The packages don’t need to be fancy or contain expensive items. Sometimes they just need/want basic items like toothpaste rather than snacks. It doesn’t take a lot of effort. And we have a system that offers as much or as little contact with the student as desired.
Could you find it in your heart to be a friend to a student starting out? Please see Lois Morris in the parish hall during coffee hour on Sunday or contact Sue Wilson at 509-690-0598. Thank you so much!
