ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) provides grants to young people who have aged out of foster care – most often for apartment security or utility deposits. However, other grants are sometimes provided such as one for registration fees for a community service opportunity. In requesting the grant recently, her Independent Living Coordinator wrote, “________ is currently working on completing her degree in Africana studies and sociology. She is very mature and responsible. She possesses leadership skills, a positive attitude and compassion for others. She has participated in many volunteer activities and positive community organizations, such as Big Bother/Big Sisters and church youth group leadership. She is also involved in many diverse activities at college and completed a study abroad in Spain last summer. She is not afraid to try new experiences and challenges, and often involves herself in activities that have a positive impact in communities. This college service opportunity will enable her to help others while also gaining a valuable learning experience.”
We received the following letter from the young recipient.
“Dear First Unitarian Church, Thank you so much for your generosity. My volunteer trip to Leesburg, FL was absolutely amazing, solidifying & eye opening. I was able to not only connect with the community but also truly impact them in a positive way. I am forever grateful for your funding. You’ve not only changed my life but also the lives of others. With profound love, _____________.
