What An Amazing Young Woman!

At the service on February 10, Sammon, a young woman who had aged out of foster care at age 18 and to whom ILYA (Independent Living for Young Adults) has been giving support, told her story. She told us how she overcame significant trauma to start moving toward her goals. She is just 19 years old but stood up in front of a large group of adult strangers and spoke absolutely eloquently… she was amazing!
Sammon is just one (very good) example of the resilience, courage, intelligence and drive that many of our young ILYA clients have. In her talk she commented on how she was inspired by Jhamyra (the young woman who spoke last year). She said she was encouraged to know someone else had walked her path and was courageous enough to talk about it to help get support for those who came after her. And now she was happy to do that too.
These young people are so inspiring! And you, congregation, are so supportive! The ILYA team couldn’t give them the support we do without you. You are the reason ILYA is strong. The offering for ILYA on the 10th totaled $1178. This will allow us to continue providing apartment/utility security deposits, tuition aid, graduation backpacks & pizza party, and all the other supports we can offer. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts (and theirs).
