Explorers and the Environment

Over the next couple of months, the Explorers (6th – 8th graders) are exploring environmental issues through the lens of “The Simpsons” television show. This long running animated sitcom often delves into environmental issues. All of the episodes that the Explorers will watch have won Environmental Media Awards which are awarded to the best television episode or film with an environmental message. This is a fun way for our Explorers to examine environmental issues and consider how our Unitarian Universalist beliefs call on us to take action. One way the Explorers will take action is to work with the Environmental Justice Task Force to increase the number of native plants on the church grounds.

This week the Explorers are watching “The Burns and the Bees” and learning about the issue of the environmental impact of the worldwide disappearance of bees, known as the Colony Collapse Disorder. Check out the episode on Amazon. The Simpsons, “The Burns and the Bees” Season 20, Episode 8. Learn more about bees here: “We can save the bees together: Sarah Red-Laird at TEDxBend”
