Congratulations to an All-Star Graduate

She is an exceptional individual,” says Debbie Griffin of the student she has supported for the last three years through the ILYA Student Care Package Program. “It has been my privilege to get to know her.” This outstanding young woman will receive her Bachelor of Arts degree on May 11 from Widener University, where she has majored in Psychology and with minors in both Legal Studies and Analysis.

When Debbie asked her if she were willing to share a few details about herself in ILYA’s publication for members of the First Unitarian Church, she willingly responded: “I am a member of Psi Chi Honor Society, Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. I am a member of the Delaware Child Protection Accountability Commission. I am working towards continuing my education through law school and plan to achieve a Masters Degree in Psychology as well. I hope to provide greater resources for youth and young adults by providing a voice in the courtroom, advocating for treatment and counseling. I will work to create reforms that will allow today’s youth to have easier access to education, housing and stability so they will become effective and positive members of society.”

Debbie proudly adds that her “remarkable student has worked to support herself throughout her college career”. First U members can share Debbie’s pride in reading her student’s concluding paragraph: “ILYA has helped my son and me on our journey through life, helping to provide assistance with household needs and essentials while I can focus on school, work, and being the best mom possible.”

Proud good wishes to this almost-graduate from Widener; thanks to Debbie Griffin for the support she has provided and the relationship they have built; kudos to all ILYA volunteers for the many ways they help these young adults, working their way to independence without families to back them; and much appreciation to all of First Unitarian for 18 years of dedication to support our ILYA program.
