Did you know that slavery didn’t end when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863? The Civil War continued and it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed, that we saw the effective end of slavery in the United States.
