The UU Service Committee’s Congregation of the Year Award honors outstanding congregations who have partnered with us to advance human rights and dismantle oppressive systems. For the 2022-2023 church year, we selected the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, Delaware, as UUSC’s Congregation of the Year!
First UU Wilmington has been a steadfast partner with UUSC for many, many years; from your long-running participation in the Guest at Your Table program, to focusing several services each year on the work of UUSC. This year, First UU became UUSC’s newest CAPAS congregation which stands for “Congregational Accompaniment Project for Asylum-seekers.” CAPAS congregations sponsor asylum-seekers as a community, assisting with housing, transportation, navigating medical and school systems, and offering neighborly welcome. First UU did not hesitate to say yes when an asylum-seeking family in Wilmington reached out for assistance.
This kind of solidarity with asylum-seekers is one of the many ways that we live our UU values in the world, and we are so grateful that First UU Wilmington joined UUSC in this work. Our partnership for justice in Wilmington and the wider world is strong and we are glad to be able to celebrate our collaboration with this award.”
