Exploring Creation Stories in RE

Our Seekers (1st – 4th graders) spent the fall exploring creation stories. They learned how animals formed humans from a Miwok Native American story. Then they learned about Gaia and how Greek gods gave humans the gifts of weaving, working with clay, and fire. They heard the Genesis story from the Bible and learned about scientists and the big bang theory.

This week the Seekers heard about Charles Darwin and his ideas about evolution. Then they participated in a lab experiment. Four habitats were set up in the Seekers room: Forest, Pond, Marsh, and Prairie. Children were given different tools which represent different bird beaks. They used different tools to try to collect food in each habitat. Then they tried to figure out which type of beak works best in each habitat and how bird beaks changed over time to fit their environment.
