March UUDAN Meeting: Criminal Justice Reform

Delaware’s probation system continues to send people back to prison—not for committing new crimes but for minor technical violations. Many people on probation feel like they have the deck stacked against them, because even the smallest mistake could uproot their lives yet again. Sending someone back to prison disrupts their rehabilitation, making it more difficult for them to eventually get a job, support their family, and have sustainable housing. This unfair system goes against so many of our UU values: the inherent worth and dignity of all; justice, equity, and compassion in human relations; and a community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
