Pastoral Care Announcement – Chad Tolman

Chadwick Alma Tolman (Chad), age 85, of Glen Mills, PA, died on April 6, 2024 surrounded by loving family members. Chad was preceded in death by his son Kenneth (Tom), his parents, Ray Tolman and Ruth Male, and his brother, Radon. Chad was born in Salt Lake City in 1938, and went to college at MIT at age 17, followed by graduate school at UC Berkeley.

While at Berkeley he met undergraduate Ann McCarthy, and they were married in 1962. They had 3 children: Alison, Susan, and the late Kenneth (Tom). The family moved to Wilmington, DE in 1965 for Chad to work as a chemist at DuPont Central Research.

At DuPont, Chad published about 65 scientific papers and wrote chapters for ten books. He was also the author of six patents. After retiring at age 58, he taught graduate students at the University of Delaware, then worked at the National Science Foundation and the National Research Council in Washington until 2003.

After his retirement, Chad worked on energy and climate change, which he saw as the central issues of our time. He volunteered for several organizations, including the Delaware Nature Society, the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, Delaware Interfaith Power and Light, and the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington. He gave sermons and talks to a variety of organizations on the morality of global climate change, and also served on the Delaware Governor’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee.

Chad is survived by his wife, Ann, of 61 years; his daughters, Alison and Susan (husband Jared); daughter-in-law Elizabeth; his beloved grandchildren, Campbell (husband Tomer), Sarah, Isabel, Lily, Peter, and Alexander; and his siblings, Trauma Anne, Carol, Gregory (wife Jenni), Nicolas, Janice, Kim, Jamie (wife Jayne), and Rarilee (husband Tom).

A celebration of life will be held at First Unitarian Church in Wilmington, DE on May 5 at 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Unitarian Church, in memory of Chad, for support of their Solar Panels Project – 730 Halstead Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Or, donations may be made to the Delaware Nature Society, in memory of Chad – 3511 Barley Mill Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.
