In Memoriam Laura Baumann

Our member, Laura Máthé Baumann, aged 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2024, after a short illness. Some of you knew her story and her connection with the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington. She grew up as a Unitarian in Transylvania and this congregation. Her son, Phil Bauman, captures this connection well in this message:

“On behalf of my family, we are grateful for the compassion, service, support, and warmth that you, the Church leadership, and congregants provided our mother. She was a committed life-long Unitarian. She was grateful to the Church for its kind and generous sponsorship and assistance during her and her young family’s emigration from Europe to America. She went through so much, and the Unitarian community and principles were among the constants in her spiritual and daily life – a unifying thread in a larger quilt so-to-speak.”

Rev. Larry Peers officiated the graveside service on Thursday, June 6th, at Graceland Memorial Park. In her first meeting with Rev. Larry, Laura was so pleased to know that Rev. Larry had visited the Unitarian Church near her childhood home in Kolozsvár.

You can read more about Laura in her obituary.
