The Reverend Pamela Wat has been called as senior minister of First Unitarian Church. She is the first woman called to ministry by the 153-year-old congregation, and the first person of color. On behalf of the Minister Search Committee, Paul Pinson made the motion to call at a special congregational meeting held shortly after yesterday’s packed worship service. Tracy Spinka-Doms presided as co-president of the Board of Trustees and Rev. Richard Speck offered the chalice lighting and closing words. There were no questions or debate on the motion. Following the collection of paper ballots, dozens of children and youth arrived in the sanctuary to be part of the announcement and celebration. The vote was 202 in favor of the call and just one opposed. Rev. Wat arrived back in the sanctuary to a warm standing ovation and members lined up to congratulate her-and enjoy a slice of celebration cake. She will take up her duties at First Unitarian on August 1.
